About this collection

The Halvor Ingebret Ostebee Papers consists of photographs, newspaper clippings, biographical, and ephemeral material related to this well-known Beaumont photographer of Norwegian ancestry.  Halvor Ostebee immigrated to the United States from Norway in 1882 and as a young man moved to Beaumont, around 1894, where he established a portable photography studio.  During his lengthy career in Beaumont he owned and operated several photography studios and is probably best known for photographing many of the promient citizens of the city at the turn of the nineteenth century as well as his famous photograph of the Lucas gusher in 1901.  Much of the collection was donated to the library by his granddaughter, Ms. Lelia Burch Arnett, in 2003.
