About this collection

The Vallie Fletcher Taylor Spindletop Photograph Collection consists of some nine photographs that document the discovery of oil at Spindletop and the crowd of boomers that soon descended upon the city of Beaumont (via railroad transportation) in quest of economic riches associated with the emerging petroleum industry.  It is believed that these images were taken by Vallie Fletcher Taylor’s great grandfather, Mr. William A. Fletcher.  The Fletchers’ were a well-known family in Beaumont and were actively engaged in the lumber trade business as well as local governmental politics.  William Fletcher served as mayor of Beaumont and also became president of the Long and Village Mills Lumber companies.
